Terrific trio

Excess Luggage, a unique Norwegian jazz band, will give their debut show
in Beijing this weekend. The band got its unique name from the cost of
traveling with one of their instruments of choice, a Hammond organ, a
piano and a drum set. This rare setup is driven by the band-members'
mutual fascination with the sound created by the combination of the three
instruments. Audiences will get a chance to see and hear the full organ

Guo's the go

A concert featuring all works composed by Chinese composer Guo Wenjing
will be staged soon. The repertoire will include Hard is the Road to the
Kingdom of Shu, Weary of Empty Hills, a concerto for the Chinese flute
and orchestra, and This Land So Rich in Beauty, an erhu concerto and
tonal poem. The concert also teams up established Chinese tenor Tang
Junqiao, flute master Yan Jiemin, the Opera Troupe of China Opera and
Dance Theater, and China Philharmonic Orchestra with conductor Yu Long.

From Broadway to Beijing

Conductor Fan Tao will lead the China Broadcast Film Symphony Orchestra
to present a concert of various Broadway musical songs, starting with the
Phantom of the Opera and followed by many other Broadway favorites, such

Meeting of the masters

Lang Lang, one of China's best pianists, will play alongside the China
Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor Charles Dutoit, noted for his
renditions of French and Russian 20th century music. Performances will

Concerto No1 in E Minor and Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. 7:30

Korean creations

An exhibition showing new trends and impetus in contemporary Korean art
features works by 15 participants, most college graduates of the early
1990s. Having grown up with a similar social background, these artists

They do not belong to any school of this pluralistic time, but find their
respective angle and presentation approach with reference to their own

Greener pastures

The Inner Mongolian grassland is one of the most abundant natural
pastures in the world. A photography show gathers some 150 works
recording the area's landscapes and local life. Participants of the

grasslands, lakes, desserts, mountains and forests, creating fresh

Simple pleasures

He Muqun's solo exhibition includes oil paintings, engravings, sketches
and other easel paintings. Born in Zhejiang Province, she travelled
overseas in her younger years and lived in Paris in 1965. Immersed in a
period when avant-garde trends such as abstract, pop and conceptual art
took center stage, she insisted on her own style, rooted in the simple,
natural and initial state of art. With her realistic approach, she
records the subject matter of daily life - fruit, bread, vegetables and
flowers - transmitting an intimate flavor and a positive mood. 20 yuan.

Lovely landscapes

Qiao Hao's new oil series, Spirit of Mountain, stems from his childhood
dream. The impasto application and abstract form produce an uplifted
mood. Bright color and fine texture of pigment constitute balanced
composition. From the fluent brush strokes, viewers can distinguish the
outlines of mountains and the traces of rivers. With unconstrained oil
techniques, Qiao expresses his love towards nature with an outflow of

Italian imagination

Selected works on paper from Italian artist Marco Del Re present unusual
and extravagant dimensions. Since 1988, he has explored lithography,
etching, linoleum and other traditional or experimental techniques in his
creation. Having been influenced by the styles of Braque and Matisse, he
has developed new forms of expression, which he had never approached in
his paintings. The colors of scarlet red and sky blue are the main tones
of pigments he chooses. Nepalese paper, traditionally made out of tree
bark, completely soaks up the ink while maintaining sharp outlines. Free.

Triumphant ones

Lines of desire

The oil painting exhibition of Chinese artist Zhang Zhi and French
painter Axelle Guilmault shows their common inspiration from daily events

Ming ink

Wang Lifeng has added new dimension and sensory ambiance to his Great
Ming Dynasty series by incorporating ink in solid form, imbuing his mixed
media pieces with a mysterious, sculptural quality. Wang makes the ink
himself by blending traditional ingredients, such as lampblack, gelatine
and cloves. He then casts the pungent mixture into molds, combining this
medium with bronze. The ink solidifies to produce reliefs of his imagined
