Chinanews, Dec 9 - There are currently more than 500 colleges and
universities in China's 31 provinces, autonomous regions and
municipalities that are ready to take in foreign students. The number of
foreign students who come to study in China is growing at an annual rate
of 30% and the academic level is also improving year by year.
In 2003, China accepted nearly 78,000 foreign students from 175 countries
and regions. 6,153 of them, or 8% of the total number of foreign
students, were offered scholarships by the Chinese government.
Another characteristic of the influx of foreign students is the obvious
advancement in academic levels. In 2003, 1,637 foreign students studied
for their doctorate degrees, an increase of 17.9% from 2002, while 3,397
foreign students studied for their master degrees, an increase of 18.9%
from 2002.
With respect to the distribution of courses, the majority of foreign
students were liberal arts majors, with Chinese language and medicine as
top favorites. In terms of the continental spread, Asian students were
the most numerous, while in terms of countries, the top five were South
Korea, Japan, U.S, Vietnam and Indonesia.
