calls to adsotrans for now and I'll move scripts onto our server next week. Are you finding

I currently working in Yinchuan, and I'm trying to teach myself Chinese (with the help of many
good friends.)

I've just started reading cartoons and simple textbooks for children, as I've picked up quite a
lot of characters by now. The problem is, I'm still struggling a bit with the grammar. I came over
this sentence in a 加菲 strip:

没有什么好消息可以告诉你的

I understand the meaning: "I don't have any good news to tell you," but I don't understand what
the final 的 does. I would probably have said: "没有什么好消息可以告诉你." Can anyone
explain?

There's a construct shi4....de (是。。。的）which gives emphasis to the "subject" of the
inner clause. The "shi4" can be omitted. There's also another case where the object "after" the de
的 can be omitted. Instead of saying "It's my car" you can say "it's mine"... for example.

In this case, I read it as a sort of passive sentence. "There isn't any good news that I can tell
you".

My Chinese level isn't that good, so I'm actually posting this here with the expectation of having
my ideas "corrected" Best way to learn, sometimes.

BTW, I hope you noticed that the translation does not say "I have no...". I really think its a
more passive tense in this case. But, Chinese tends to be more circumlocutious anyways.

I do know the 是....的 structure. If I were to write the sentence out without omitting the 是,
would it then be "没有什么好消息是可以告诉你的"? Is it possible to say
"没有什么好消息可以告诉你"？

Think of this as:

没有什么好 (可以告诉你的) 消息

The 可以告诉你 part is the attribute of the noun 消息, and this is shown through the
particle 的.

没有什么大的消息
没有什么好的消息
没有什么有意思的消息
没有什么可以告诉你的消息

"过于频繁" does not mean "exceeding the bandwidth", but "too frequent" here.
"Bandwidth" is "带宽" in most simplified chinese OSs.(Brainless word to word translation, I have
to say.)

If everything has to be so "strictly" interpreted then 谱 would never be in 靠谱！

Chinese is not my first or native language. This is sort of the board for that I guess. I am just
finding with characters there is enormous flexibility and learning them is different from learning
alphabetically base phonetic languages so one should strive not to be too translating of things
word for word..(xiaocai?)

I can hear the difference, though, and I also notice a difference when I speak.

I also know from my mother tongue, Croatian, that the 'h' can be pronounced in different ways,
though it is written the same.

I think that any such classification will be an approximation at a certain level.

I've been reading a bit about Yan Lianke and it looks like his stuff might be quite interesting.
He's had a few books banned, a few published, and admits to censoring what he writes in order to
get it published. The description of Serve the People didn't really interest me - desecration of
revolutionary images, sex, yawn - but he's won a couple of prestigious awards so I thought I might
give his short stories a look.

Anyone read any or got any advice on where to start? I was going to look at 年月日, a short
story collection which won the Lu Xun award in 2000.

I've only read his long stuff, I'm afraid. He himself considers Serve the People a minor work.
Banning does weird things to aesthetic standards. But the novel 受活 is great fun and does
interesting things with local culture and extensive footnotes.

He's not universally praised, however. A couple of years ago I was talking to Fan Wen 范稳,
author of bestselling novels about foreigners in western Sichuan and Tibet, and he didn't consider
Yan Lianke a real writer, just someone who was playing with words.

Tell us how his short stuff turns out.

年月日 was out of stock on amazon.cn, so ended up ordering 受活 - will see how I get on with
it.

收活 turned up today - a quick flick through seems quite promising, there's some interesting
stuff in the footnotes. Not sure when I'll get to it as 三体 was in the same delivery, which is
much more tempting, and I've also (and don't ask me how, I don't know) ended up reading a chunk of
曾子墨's autobiography. She's started to really irritate me, but I'm far enough in I think I
might just finish out of bloody-mindedness.

About a third of the way through, really enjoying it. The village scenes are great fun, without
turning anyone into comedy peasants - or for that matter comedy cripples, the back story of the
village and how 茅枝婆 ended up there (just finished the footnote on 入社) is keeping me
interested, and I suspect there's going to be a whole load of enjoyment to be had from the
茅枝婆 / 县长 conflict.

Also loving the writing - I find the village comes across very vividly and some of the images - a
man dressed up being like southern bananas on a northern date tree; post-snowfall trees holding
great white umbrellas - are arresting. The dialogue is also well done.

Yes, 河國榮 left TVB, that's sad....less chance to see him on tv. But I hope audience get to

First of all, I have nothing against him or gay people. And I think one has issues thinking being
called gay is offensive. I'd offer an apology if Mr Rivers finds what I said offensive though. I
saw his name in the famous UNSW alumni list on Wikipedia. As the information there said he was a
Hong Kong-based actor, I was tempted to learn more about him. Unfortuantly what I got from
googling is pretty much what I said previously. So I assumed he was 40-ish and single. UNSW is one
of the best Unis in the country and people are dying to get into Medicine. Since he gave up his
study and thus a promising career opportunity because of his obsession over Cheung, and supposedly
he was never married, I suspected he was gay. Being gay makes one a minority. Being a minority
makes one different. Being different is worth knowing. This is how my logic went.

This is the new reality that's creeping up on people who haven't been keeping watch. This is going
to be more and more common and less of a shock to people. I like having these people out there who
are just tearing it up when it comes to the language it's great to aspire to even if you never
reach the top of the mountain.

I just got done with episode 9. This is the “ski-resort” episode. What an incredible
coincidence! Out of all the people in Beijing, the 2 people that are not supposed to meet actually
meet, who’d have thought that would ever happen… (I kind of did). Xiaofeng, Jianping and
Dangdang meet Dongbei and Juanzi during a ski-outing. Jianping avoids introducing his wife
(Xiaofeng) to Juanzi. Of course clever Xiaofeng knows that something is up. At first, she thinks
that Jianping is embarrassed because she (Xiaofeng) is too old and too ugly for him -- she thinks
that's why he's not introducing her. Xiaofeng than overhears Dongbei saying to his naive little
wife that she (Xiaofeng) is the housekeeper of the Song family. Whoops. That's not good. Of course
she's really pissed and leaves for home. Home his her mom's place, of course. I guess this pretty
much sums up the major developments of this episode.

Xiaofeng is really starting to tick me off, but Jianping ain’t the sharpest tool in the shed,
neither. I shouldn’t say this, since people get offended really easy, but this is just a curious
observation: maybe Xiaofeng is not only supposed to represent the disillusioned middle aged
housewife, but also the crazy menopause-haunted jealous dragon a lot of guys are scared of ending
up with?
What do ya’ll think of the opening scene, when Dangdang grandparents don’t want to let
Dangdang play with his little 游戏机. Weird, huh? This is not the first time this has happened,
either. And Grandma tells little Dangdang he should teach his mom to play this with this? Xiaofeng
should be taking pills, and lots of them!

Anyway, I got a couple of questions, wish someone could help me answer them:

What in the world is a 正高. It’s probably the position Jianping pretty ex-college/neighbour/
supposed lover is occupying, but what is it? I’d really like to know.

Also, about 20min 11sec into this marvellous episode, Xiaofeng says she now knows the true meaning
of 夫贵妻荣 . Well, good for her. But I don’t know what it means and would appreciate it if
someone were to share his or her wisdom with me.

One more thing about Xiaofeng: She’s at her parents’s (娘家) AGAIN. And Dangdang tries to
call her. Her cell phone clearly says 家, but she still doesn’t pick up the phone. A few hours
later she complains to her mom about the fact that Song Jiangping didn’t even call her. That’s
pretty mean, wouldn’t you agree? Make Grandma hate him, too.

Anyway, after all, she’s not that bad a person. She just has some issues, I don’t hate her or
anything, don’t get me wrong. And Song Jianping could certainly do better, too.

One last observation: Dangdang seems to be slightly hyper-active. Honestly. Have you ever seen him
just sit still? No. Most of the time he’s looks like he’s got ants in his pants.

To those of you who have not watched any more than 1-9. Do you think anyone will die before the
number 23 is over? I don't know why I'm asking, it's just that it seems time for something really
tragic to happen. Of course, someone already died, but we didn't really know him, right? And, like
I said before, I am still waiting for Jianping to mess up while he is performing surgery.

Ok, hope I got time for episode 10 tomorrow, but I’m afraid I’ve got too many classes and

I have finally got to episode 9! I like the plot but I find it is a bit slow (this could have more
to do with the fact that it has taken me 1.5 years to get this far than to do with the script).

I have the same question as Randall, what does 正高 mean? When I pop it into Babel Fish it
translates it as, "Orthometric height". From the individual characters I thought it my mean
"honourable", when I do a search on the internet its usage tends to imply something like
"(medical) consultant" or "the crème-de-la-crème expert". The usage in the episode tends to
imply something different. Does anyone know what it means?

正高 is a title of technical post. It's short for "正高级技术职称" or something else. I
don't know how to explain it in English. Hope someone can explain more than that.

I think Steve's Chinese speaking is fantastic! I even think his 4 tones are very good too, however
I can not find any mistakes. I think if I let my parents listen to his tape then they could not
find out he is actually a westerner speaking Chinese.

However if I have to be fussy about his Chinese speaking then I d say he uses more conjunction
words than a native Chinese person does, like he uses more 但是，因为，可是。 but this is
not a problem though.

i really like his chinese and philosophy too, but i would not say he is without mistakes.

for example, he talks about having developed a near-native quality of pronunciation. but i've
hardly ever heard him pronounce the chinese X sound correctly. he makes it sound too much like an
english S.

i think his language skill like his ability to communicate in another language is awesome! and
thats what he was going for rather than trying to sound like a native. as long as he can sound
native enough to be understood.

Hi, ive gotten great answers from people here, so helpful, i found the character i want, but i
want it in detail not just a FONT CHARACTER, its gonna be for a tattoo so i like the brush strokes
in the character.

this character have three pronunciation
#1 miao4 as you said it's a surname
#2 miu4 means false or wrong
#3 mou2 it makes a word 绸缪 means lingering

If you're using firefox, f5 does the same on a mac as it does on windows - it reloads the page. So
basically if you get a database error, don't sit there pressing refresh until everything works,

French and very little German. I began German self-study but never really continued. Hope to get

July 19 - Floods triggered by tropical storm Bilis are finally retreating
in China's coastal provinces after at least 198 people died, local
officials said.
In Guangdong Province, the worst hit, people struggled to cope with water
shortages, ravaged roads and other damage, the China News Service
reported yesterday.
Moreover, traffic, water, electricity and communications have returned to
normal in Fuzhou, capital of East China's Fujian Province, the Xinhua
News Agency reported.
But rain was still forecast for Hunan and Guangdong provinces today and
tomorrow.
To better deal with the disastrous floods, the Ministry of Civil Affairs
activated Grades 4 and 3 of the emergency response mechanism, Xinhua said.
A round-the-clock alert towards possible geological disasters issued by
the Ministry of Land and Resources remained in effect.
During a field visit to Hunan, Vice-Premier Hui Liangyu urged authorities
and governments in disaster-hit areas to take effective relief measures
to relocate those who had lost their homes and to curb the spread of
infectious diseases.
Hui said storm-ravaged areas still face great challenges, asking
governments at all levels to take effective measures to prevent more
possible disasters and ensure safety of major rivers and reservoirs in
the flooding season.
The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters have sent a dozen
of task forces to check flood prevention and control efforts along major
rivers.
Hui warned local officials of their duty in flood control, asking them to
take measures against possible spread of epidemics in flood-hit areas.
The vice-premier also urged local governments to help farmers restart
farming production in disaster-ravaged areas to minimize the damage to
crop growth and harvest.
Geological disaster supervision, patrol work and risk appraisal must
focus on flood control of small and medium-sized rivers and reservoirs
while being on alert for large-scale ones, Hui noted.
Ten more people had been confirmed dead from the storms in South China's
Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, bringing the death toll in China to
198, Xinhua said.
Fed by the tropical storm Bilis, heavy rainfall in a large area over a
longer time span than usual has led to the disastrous storms in Guangdong
during the past days, said Wang Dongxiao, an oceanographer from the
Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Statistics indicated that as many as 92 people have been confirmed dead
and more than 100 are missing in Hunan.
Bilis the fourth tropical storm of the season, which that landed on the
mainland on Friday also claimed 43 lives in Fujian Province and 44 in
Guangdong.
Furthermore, 557 reservoirs in the region were forced to discharge
floodwater yesterday because of the torrential rains.
Direct economic losses from the storm totalled 12 billion yuan (US$1.5
billion) after 160,000 hectares of crops and 113,000 houses were
destroyed, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said on its website yesterday.
Bilis triggered heavy rainfall and severe floods in Zhejiang, Fujian,
Jiangxi, Hunan and Guangdong provinces and Guangxi when it came ashore.

Chinanews, July 14 �C Even the denial by vice governor of the People's
Bank of China (PBOC) Wu Xiaoling could not blow away the market��s
speculation that the central bank would issue new policies to push
forward the foreign exchange reform, said a report in International
Finance News.
Instead, it is more and more expected that the government will publish
new macro-control policies in the market, fuelled by latest statistics.
According to a report released by Morgan Stanley on July 11, China was
expected to raise the deposit and lending interest rates by 27 points and
would further raise these rates at the end of this year.
Analysts said that the further adoption of the control policies depends
on the effect of the policies implemented during the first phase. After
the foreign trade surplus hit the new record high of $14.5 billion, the
data of bank credit further proved that the overheating economy had not
been cooled down by the previous control policies.
Increasing both the deposit and lending interest rates might very
possibly be included in the new control policies. Persons related with
the industry said that the latest increase of the lending interest rates
was criticized for widening the rate gap and stimulating banks to
increase the loans. It is impossible for the central bank only to raise
the lending interest rates, they said, for this will further widen the
interest rate gap as far as the current control effect is concerned.
Some experts said the reason why China was reluctant to raise the saving
interest rate was the strong speculation of RMB appreciation. But now the
Fed has raised interest rates by 25 points again and the market is
expecting another hike in August. So the pressure of RMB appreciation
will not be increased if the deposit rates of RMB are raised by an
appropriate margin.

June 21 - The Industrial and Commercial Bankof China (ICBC), the
country's biggest lender, is expected to listin Hong Kong in October, one
month later than previously reported,Xinhua learned on Tuesday.
A market insider familiar with the ICBC listing plan, who askednot to be
named, said the bank is not ready to submit its application to the Hong
Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEx)until "the end of June or early
July".
Earlier media reports said the HKEx would start scrutinizing the ICBC
plan this week, enabling it to go public as early as September.
The bank has yet to release its annual business report of 2005,and its
vice president Li Xiaopeng said it was accelerating the auditing for its
first quarter financial statement "to meet the requirement for a public
listing".
The Social Security Fund, China's national pension fund, signedan
agreement with the ICBC on Monday, pledging to pour an investment of more
than 18 billion yuan (2.25 billion U.S. dollars) into the bank.
A foreign trio of Goldman Sachs, American Express and Allianz Group has
already paid a combined 3.78 billion U.S. dollars for a 8.89 percent
stake in the ICBC, the biggest-ever amount of foreigninvestment in
China's banking industry.
China hopes its "big four" state banks -- the ICBC, Bank of China, China
Construction Bank and Agricultural Bank of China --, once plagued by a
mountain of bad debts, will strengthen corporategovernance and streamline
operations with the help of foreign investors and public listings.
Investors are also eager to buy Chinese bank shares to tap intothe robust
Chinese economy, which has grown about 10 percent in each of the past
three years.
Construction Bank took the lead in the "big four" to list in Hong Kong
last October.
ICBC is reportedly targeting another share offering on China's mainland
by the end of this year.

The six group of more than 50 migrant workers from Mianyang of Sichuan
Province and Huai'an of Jiangsu Province working at Linhuan industrial
park, a "861 key project" in Anhui province, took two special buses home
for wheat harvest on the early morning of May 29 2006. It was learned
that local construction sites made timely adjustments to their
construction schemes according to their progress of various projects,
time limits and other comprehensive factors and arranged to allow migrant
workers to return home for wheat harvest and at the same time guarantee
safe and orderly progress of the construction projects.

"Eight immortals crossing the sea" dating back to Emperor Qianlong's

Shanghai Maglev to add World Expo station

Shanghai Urban Planning Administration Bureau director general Mao
Jialiang said on May 11 that in order to welcome the 2010 Shanghai World
Expo, the Shanghai Maglev Line would be extended and add three stations
including World Expo, South Railway Station and Hongqiao Airport.
Shanghai Maglev is the world's first maglev transportation system for
commercial operation. At present, the operational Longyang Road-Pudong
Airport line has a total length of 30 kilometers.

It was learnt from the conference on the preparation for the 2010
Shanghai World Expo held in Shanghai on May 11 that the venues of the
expo would be built on both sides of Huangpu River in Shanghai's
downtown, between Nanpu Bridge and Lupu Bridge. It will cover an area of
5.28 sq. kilometers according to plan. Pictured: selected sites for the

The two-star Jianyuan Hotel, Beijing, located near Tiananmen Square, is
two kilometers from the railway station and 28 kilometers from the
airport. The hotel, which is also close to the Beijing Concert Hall,
features karaoke rooms, a gym, a beauty salon and a shopping arcade.

The hotel has 91 guest rooms, including single rooms, standard rooms and
superior suites. Each standard room measures 25 square meters and is
equipped with air-conditioning, cable television and an IDD telephone.

The hotel's business center provides basic services and meeting rooms,
with the largest room capable of holding 100 people.

Black, White Women Differ on Dieting

Overweight or obese white American women are more likely than their black
peers to ask for dieting assistance, such as counseling from a medical
professional, a doctor's prescription, membership in a weight-loss group,
or advice from a trainer, a new study finds.

The study authors, who surveyed 120 women in Philadelphia, also found
that body image was an important motivator for white women in seeking
dieting help but not as important to black women.

The findings are published in the current issue of the journal Ethnicity
& Disease.

"We found that African-American women did not differ from Caucasians in
terms of concerns about body shape and weight," but those concerns were
more likely to motivate white women to seek dieting assistance, said lead
author Rachel Annunziato, assistant professor in the department of
psychiatry, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York City.

Obesity-related health concerns were not cited by either black or white
women in the study as a primary motivation for losing weight.

Annunziato said cultural factors likely play an important role in
influencing whether, when, and where women seek help with dieting and the
type of assistance they prefer.

"Community-based approaches appear to be promising vehicles for promoting
weight loss in ethnic minorities; however, there is much work to be done
in terms of developing programs that improve both weight loss and
successful maintenance of weight loss," Annunziato said in a prepared
statement.

Modifying weight-loss programs to better address the needs of black women
and other minorities may be an important step.

MATURIN, Venezuela, July 1 - Robinho scored a hat-trick as defending
champions Brazil, beaten by Mexico in their opening Copa America game,
bounced back to beat Chile 3-0 at the unfinished Monumental stadium on
Sunday.

Robinho converted a controversial penalty amid furious Chile protests in
the 36th minute and added two more in the last 10 minutes as Chile ran
out of steam. Both teams have three points from two games in Group B.

The 52,000-capacity stadium, built in less than one year, was ruled fit
to stage the games even though it was clearly not ready.

The area around the arena was a sea of mud strewn with building materials
and piles of debris. Inside, dust covered the seats and more debris was
piled into corners.

Despite the result, Brazil were far from convincing for most of the game
and spared by poor Chilean finishing in the second half.

Brazil struggled to find a way through Chile's packed defence early on
and Robinho, apart from a couple of trademark stepovers, saw little of
the ball.

But they were gifted a chance in the 36th minute when Gilberto's cross
from the left was comfortably held by goalkeeper Claudio Bravo but the
referee gave a penalty, apparently for pushing.

Robinho calmly scored with a low shot which just eluded Bravo's
outstretched hand.

Chile came out fighting after halftime and striker Humberto Suazo was
close from a free kick.

Shortly afterwards, the shaven-headed Suazo was put clean through but
delayed and, by the time he shot, there were three Brazilian defenders on
the line to clear the ball.

Jorge Valdivia wasted another chance when he shot straight at a defender
from close range.

Robinho finished the Chileans off in the 84th minute when he latched onto
Vanger Love's pass and chipped over Bravo.

Three minutes later, he collected the ball 40 metres from goal, dribbled
past two defenders and scored with a shot into the corner.

Wang Zhizhi, born July 8, 1977 in Beijing, China) is a professional
basketball player formerly in the National Basketball Association.

Wang is 216 cm (7'1") tall. Wang's father Wang Weijun (196 cm) and mother
Ren Huanzhen (186 cm) were both basketball players. Wang is married with
one son.

In China, Wang is sometimes affectionally called "Da Zhi" or "Big Zhi".
In the NBA, Wang's nickname "Dodger" is a transliteration of the word.

Wang joined the Army club in 1994, who conveniently changed his date of
birth from 1977 to 1979, a common practice within China's sports system.
When the Chinese Basketball Association started in 1995, Wang was one of
the youngest players in the league. Nevertheless, he soon became a
starter in the star-studded army team Bayi Rockets. From 1995 to his
departure for the NBA after the 2001 Finals, the import-less Bayi Rockets
won all CBA Finals and National Games of the PRC. The Bayi dynasty was
upended by Yao Ming and the Shanghai Sharks as soon as Wang left for the
NBA.

In the 1995 FIBA World Championship for Juniors (Under-19 players), Wang
led China to a 9th place finish with a 4-4 record. He averaged 22.3
points, making 60% of his field goals and 86% of his free throws. He also
averaged 11.1 rebounds per game and led the tournament in shots blocked.
As a result, Wang was named to the All-Tournament team.

In 1996, Wang became the first Asian player invited to play for the
international squad against the best USA high school players in the
prestigious Nike Hoop Summit Game. He started and scored 6 points and
grabbed 6 rebounds. He was offered a basketball scholarship from John
Thompson of Georgetown University.

Wang Zhizhi became an Olympian in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, where he
started and averaged 11.1 points and 5.6 rebounds, helping China to
finish at 8th place.

In the 1997 Asia Basketball Championship, a fever Wang had was partially
responsible for a semifinal loss to Korea, which prevented China from
qualifying for the 1998 World Basketball Championship.

In 1998, China regained its supremacy in the Bangkok Asian Games.

After leading the Chinese national squad to the 1999 Asia Championship
title, Wang again starred for China in the 2000 Sydney Olympics,
averaging 13.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game. He also made
54% of his field goals and 90% of his free throws as China placed 10th.

SEOUL, South Korea - US envoy Christopher Hill said Friday that North
Korea is prepared to promptly close down its Yongbyon nuclear reactor in
line with an agreement reached earlier this year.

Hill, speaking at a press conference in Seoul following his return from
the North, also said both the US and North Korea reaffirmed their
commitment to the February accord aimed at North Korea's denuclearization
as well as an early meeting of chief representatives to the six-way
negotiating framework.

"The talks were very detailed, very substantive and I believe they were
also very useful and positive," Hill said at the joint press conference
with his South Korean counterpart, Chun Yung-woo.

"The DPRK indicated that they are prepared promptly to shut down the
Yongbyon facility as called for in the February agreement," Hill said.

Hill said the North is ready to disable the reactor, also in line with
the agreement, "although we must work out the details."

While saying that North Korea's denuclearization can be achieved, Hill
also said it will take time and effort.

"I sense that we are going to be able to achieve our full objectives,
that is complete denuclearization, but, also burdened by the realization
of the fact that we are going to have to spend a great deal of time, a
great deal of effort, a lot of work in achieving these," Hill said.

In February, North Korea promised China, Japan, Russia, South Korea and
the US, the other members of the six-way talks, to shut down its main
nuclear facility at Yongbyon by mid-April.

That was delayed, however, due to a dispute over $25 million in allegedly
illicit North Korean funds frozen in a bank in Macau.

Hill said he was invited to visit by North Korea and made no effort to
meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.

BRUSSELS - The United States told Russia on Thursday a Kremlin offer to
share a radar site in Azerbaijan could not replace US plans to site a
missile shield in eastern Europe.

"I was very explicit in the meeting that we saw the Azeri radar as an
additional capability and that we intend to proceed with the ... radar in
the Czech Republic," US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said after a
meeting of NATO and Russian defence ministers.

Gates played down hopes of an early end to the months-long dispute with
Moscow over the shield proposal.

He said he doubted experts would come up with a full appraisal of the
week-old Russian offer before July 1-2 talks between President George W.
Bush and Russia's Vladimir Putin.

Gates said Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov did not respond
during the meeting to his remarks. Diplomats said Serdyukov had earlier
repeated that Moscow sees the Azeri proposal replacing the existing US
plan.

Gates said he welcomed the surprise offer to share radar data made by
Putin at a Group of Eight (G8) meeting last week.

"I repeated our willingness to work and partner with Russia on missile
defence," he said.

The United States plans to use interceptors in Poland and radar in the
Czech Republic, a configuration Washington says is ideal for blocking any
missile, particularly from Iran, heading towards the United States and
most of Europe.

Russia has said the US scheme is a threat to its own security and that
the proposed US bases on its doorstep could be converted to more
dangerous uses in the future.

Washington has said it wants to hold expert-level talks to explore the
possibilities of the Russian offer of the Azeri radar, but Gates said he
was "sceptical" there would be any conclusions before Bush welcomes Putin
in Maine next month.

'Tacit endorsement'

Tension between Washington and Moscow alarmed European NATO members,
particularly after Putin threatened to target missiles on Europe if
Washington went ahead with building the shield.

The project has also raised concerns it will split NATO into those who
would be covered by the shield and those not. Analysts said Turkey,
Greece, Bulgaria and Romania would not get full protection.

In what US officials hailed as a tacit endorsement of the US plan, NATO
defence ministers agreed to explore building a "bolt-on" anti-missile
system that would plug those gaps.

The study should be completed by February. NATO officials hope the
alliance can agree by a summit in April in Romania to start work on such
a system, which would deploy complementary interceptors to cover
southeast Europe.

"We do believe that (our) concerns have been addressed and understood,"
Bulgarian Defence Minister Defence Veselin Bliznakov told Reuters.

"What we just need is the US (missile shield) and the one which would be
added by NATO."

A senior US official, who requested anonymity, said: "What you see here
is allies agreeing to adapt NATO's work to the reality that there will be

HEILIGENDAMM, Germany - World leaders meeting in Germany turned their
attention to Africa on Friday, agreeing a $60 billion pledge to fight
AIDS and other killer diseases ravaging the continent, according to a
diplomat.

"The issue is now fixed. The text is agreed," a diplomat from a Group of
Eight (G8) member country told Reuters during a summit of the club of
industrialised nations.

"The agreement within the G8 will follow the US proposal to increase the
aid for fighting these diseases to $60 billion in the forthcoming years
with $30 billion coming from the US".

Merkel will make the deal public on the summit's final day after a
meeting with the heads of six African nations. Detail on the plans were
not available, making it hard to tell how much new money the deal
involves.

The G8 countries had wrangled late into Thursday night about specifics on
aid for Africa. They were expected to broadly recommit themselves to
pledges made at a 2005 summit in Scotland when they said they would
double development funding by 2010.

The $60 billion will be used to combat AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis,
global diseases that have been especially devastating for African peoples
and their economies.

Campaigners for Africa say the $60 billion pledge falls short of UN
targets for extending treatment to tackle disease.

Two leading campaigners, rock stars Bono and Bob Geldof, put pressure on
G8 summit host, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and her fellow leaders
from the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Italy, Japan and Russia.

"The chancellor has asked us to trust her and we are tempted, but we
cannot risk being let down by the G8 again," said Bono.

Ginseng shows benefit in cancer treatment

CHICAGO - Flaxseed slowed the growth of prostate tumors in men, while
ginseng helped relieve the fatigue that cancer patients often feel, US
researchers reported on Saturday in two of the first scientifically
rigorous looks at alternative medicine.

The studies reflect doctors' efforts to explore the risks and benefits of
foods and supplements that are routinely taken by their patients with
little scientific proof they help.

Americans spend between $36 billion and $47 billion a year on
complementary and alternative therapies, according to the National Center
for Health Statistics.

"Patients are taking these compounds but we need to know if they are
doing any good or any harm," said Dr. Bruce Cheson of Georgetown
University Hospital in Washington, who led a panel on alternative
therapies at a meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

In the flaxseed study, researchers at Duke University Medical Center in
North Carolina and colleagues evaluated the seed's role as a food
supplement in 161 men who were scheduled to undergo surgery for prostate
cancer.

"The growth rate was decreased in the men who got flaxseed," said Dr.
Nancy Davidson, an oncologist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore
who is president-elect of ASCO. "I think this is fascinating."

Flaxseed is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and lignans, a fiber found on the
seed coat.

"We were looking at flaxseed because of its unique nutrient profile,"
said Wendy Demark-Wahnefried, a researcher in Duke's School of Nursing,
who led the study.

Half of the men in the study added 30 grams of flaxseed daily to their
diets for about 30 days. Half of the flaxseed group also went on a
low-fat diet.

After the surgery, the researchers looked at the men's tumor cells to see
how quickly the cancer had multiplied.

The cancer cells in both the flaxseed groups grew about 30 to 40 percent
slower than the control group.

But Demark-Wahnefried is not ready to prescribe flaxseed.

"It's a healthy food. It has a lot of vitamins and a lot of fiber. But we
can not definitively say at this point you should take flaxseed because
it is protective against prostate cancer," she said, adding that flaxseed
now needed to be studied to see if it can prevent prostate cancer.

In the ginseng trial, Debra Barton of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,
Minnesota, and colleagues tested three different doses of the herb on
patients with a variety of cancers who were expected to live at least six
months.

Twenty-five percent of patients taking a 1,000-mg dose and 27 percent of
patients taking a 2,000-mg dose said their fatigue symptoms were
"moderately better" or "much better."

Only 10 percent of those taking a 750-mg dose reported an improvement,
which was about the same as the placebo group.

Patients in the trial took Wisconsin ginseng from a single crop that was
tested for uniform potency. It was powdered and given in a capsule form.

"I wouldn't have predicted this, I have to admit," Davidson said in an
interview. "We might want to test this on a large scale."

The flaxseed study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and
the ginseng study was supported by US Public Health Service grants.

KHARTOUM, Sudan - The Sudanese government condemned a new set of US
economic sanctions aimed at pressuring it to halt the bloodshed in
Darfur, describing them Tuesday as "unfair and untimely" and calling on
the rest of the world to ignore them.

President Bush announced the United States was enforcing sanctions that
bar 31 Sudanese companies owned or controlled by Sudan's government from
the US banking system. The sanctions also prevent three Sudanese
individuals from doing business with US companies or banks.

"We believe this decision is unfair and untimely," Sudan's Foreign
Ministry spokesman, Ali Sadiq, told The Associated Press.

The European Union said it was prepared to consider tougher measures to
push Sudan to finally allow a large UN peacekeeping mission into Darfur.
"In principle, we are open to consider that," Javier Solana told the AP.

Sadiq defending Sudan, saying it accepted a first batch of 3,000 UN
peacekeepers in April to reinforce the overwhelmed African Union force
already deployed in Darfur, where more than 200,000 people have died and
2.5 million have fled their homes in four years of fighting between
Sudanese forces and rebels.

"These American measures come at a time when Sudan is actively discussing
peace in Darfur and working on the hybrid force," of UN and African Union
peacekeepers, Sadiq said. "We invite the international community to
ignore and condemn these sanctions."

The US mission to the United Nations has been drafting a resolution for
broader UN sanctions against Sudan that is expected to face resistance in
the Security Council.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said he needs more time to promote
negotiations and persuade the Sudanese government to accept more
peacekeepers.

Asked whether the US sanctions would complicate his job of getting Sudan
to agree to a larger UN-African Union peacekeeping force, Ban said: "We
will have to see."

The UN agreed last week with the African Union on the final outline of
the hybrid force that would more than triple the number of peacekeepers
in Darfur with a mission of at least 23,000 soldiers and police. The
peacekeepers would be allowed to launch pre-emptive attacks to stop
violence.

South Africa's UN ambassador questioned the timing of the US sanctions in
the midst of those negotiations.

The New York Post has learned the Houston Rockets soon will announce Rick
Adelman as their new coach.

Adelman is a flawless choice for a team anchored by two superstars and
two or three other key components. Never a self-promoter or one to demand
players he must or must not have, he merely manages (never over-coaches)
the personnel on tap and gets them to the playoffs �C 14 out of 14 times
as coach of Portland and Sacramento.

Rick Adelman, the only coach the Rockets targeted or interviewed, agreed
to terms on a contract to become the Rockets next coach, a person with
knowledge of the Rockets' decision-making said on Monday.

Adelman will fly to Houston on Tuesday and be introduced on Wednesday.

Study: Young girls more likely to be fat

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - As every Western nation struggles with child obesity,
the Swedes are puzzled by an unusual blip in the data: Why are little
girls more likely to be fat than little boys?

A recent study by researchers at Sweden's Uppsala University showed that
today's 4-year-old girls were six times as likely to be obese compared to
20 years ago - a bigger jump than among boys.

"This indicates that there is a relatively recent change in our
lifestyles that is behind this," said Ulf Holmback, the lead researcher
for the study published in the April issue of Acta Paediatrica. "But it's
difficult to say what that is."

The weight increase itself was expected - Swedes, along with most other
Europeans, have been getting heavier.

But obesity experts are scratching their heads over the gender difference
that emerges in obesity rates. In 1982, just 1 percent of all 4-year-olds
were deemed obese. By 2002, 2 percent of the boys that age were obese,
but 6 percent of the girls were. The discrepancy was similar for
10-year-olds.

An analysis of children who are overweight - not obese - the percentage
of overweight 4-year-olds has roughly doubled to 20 percent for girls and
18 percent for boys during the same 20-year period. (Generally, a child
42 inches tall weighing 50 pounds would be considered obese; the same
child weighing 45 pounds would be considered overweight.)

"It's hard to come up with a smart explanation for this," said Carl-Erik
Flodmark, head of the child obesity center at Malmo University Hospital.
"One biological explanation could be that boys are more active, and when
the calorie load increases, maybe girls are more affected."

Flodmark, considered one of Europe's experts on childhood obesity, said
the research could be skewed because it studied children from just one
part of Sweden. But, he said, other studies also reveal the gender
difference in obesity rates for that age group.

According to data compiled by the International Association for the Study
of Obesity, IASO, the situation seems unique to Sweden.

The IASO has compiled surveys from all European Union countries, and
typically the differences in the obesity rates for boys and girls are
very small. In countries that have large gender discrepancies among
children - such as Greece and Estonia - it is the boys who have higher
rates of being overweight.

And among adults across Europe, women generally are fitter than men.

Since 1980, when Swedes were among of the slimmest of Western
nationalities, obesity among adults has doubled from 5 percent to 10
percent by 2005 in both sexes, according to Sweden's national statistics
agency. However, roughly half the men are overweight compared to 36
percent of the women.

That is still far lower than the United States, where recent government
figures show 71 percent of men are overweight, and two-thirds of women
are. About one-third of the US adult population is obese.

Among EU nations, Sweden is in the middle, with Germany, Greece and the
Czech Republic the most overweight, according to the IASO.

The IASO's Neville Rigby said Sweden is hardly alone in having heavier
children.

"Worldwide, in every country, we're beginning to see changes taking
place, sometimes quite rapidly," Rigby said.

Holmback and other researchers hope to eventually sort out why Swedish
girls are getting heavier than boys. Both he and Flodmark said it is
crucial to help girls who are obese because they suffer more under the
pressure of modern beauty ideals.

"It doesn't matter as much for boys if they are obese," Flodmark said.

CAIRO, Egypt - Graduate student Waleed Mohammed Shaalan was planning on
bringing his Egyptian family back to Virginia Tech but a rampaging gunman
prevented that. The young man lost his life but was credited Thursday
with acting to save a fellow student.

The day before Monday's massacre, Shaalan called home and said he
intended to visit Egypt next month and then return to Virginia with his
wife and 15-month-old son who had been living in Egypt, his parents said
Thursday.

The family got another call two days later. The Egyptian Embassy in
Washington told them Shaalan had been one of the 32 victims in the
deadliest school shooting in modern U.S. history.

"I talked to him over the internet Sunday," his mother Saadiya
Abdel-Mageed Ali said in a soft and anguished voice. "He asked me to move
closer to the Web camera so he can see my face better. 'I want to see
your face mama!' he kept saying."

Shaalan, 32, had been at Virginia Tech since August studying for a Ph.D.
in civil engineering. He was ambitious, saying he wanted to follow in the
footsteps of Ahmed Zewail, an Egyptian who won the Nobel prize for
chemistry in 1999, said his father, Mohammed Shaalan, 65.

"I am talking to you now and I am still in disbelief. I lost the most
precious person in my life," Mohammed Shaalan told The Associated Press
by telephone from his home in the Nile Delta town of Zagazig. "He used to
tell me that he wants to be someone like Nobel winner Ahmed Zewail."

Randy Dymond, a civil engineering professor, said Shaalan was credited
with distracting gunman Cho Seung-Hui to save the life of a fellow
student.

Dymond, who attended a service for Shaalan Thursday, said the Egyptian
was in the first classroom Cho attacked and was badly wounded. Cho
returned to the room twice to search for signs of life.

During one of those incidents, a second student who was uninjured, was
playing dead. When Shaalan noticed Cho making a move to shoot the
student, the Egyptian made a "protective movement to basically decoy the
killer into thinking it was him making any kind of sound instead of the
survivor," Dymond said.

Dymond declined to give the name of the student who survived, but said
the student wanted him to tell the story "so that the family of Waleed
understands the sacrifice."

Shaalan's mother broke down when she heard Dymond's account.

"He was trying to save someone else?" she said repeatedly.

Dymond said Shaalan's body was taken to a Blacksburg mosque Thursday
afternoon so classmates, teachers and friends could say goodbye before it
was sent to Egypt for burial.

Egyptian newspapers published photographs of Shaalan's wedding. His wife
Amira, 28, is also an engineer, Al-Ahram newspaper reported. She wore an
intricately decorated white gown and veil, clutching a bouquet of pink
flowers. Shaalan planned to bring Amira and his son, Khaled, to Virginia
in May, his parents said.

"Why was he killed? What did he do? What is his guilt? He just wanted to
continue his studies and obtain a Ph.D. He wanted to be unique in his
field," said Mohammad Shaalan, a retired government official. "I can only
say that a man's life is in God's hands. Thanks be to God."

Shaalan obtained his bachelor and master's degrees in civil engineering
from Zagaziq University. He worked at a government research center before
he receiving a scholarship to study at Virginia Tech.

"He was the simplest and nicest guy I ever knew," Fahad Pasha, Shaalan's
roommate, said on the Web site of the Muslim Students Association at
Virginia Tech. "We would be studying for our exams and he would go buy a
cake and make tea for us."

SEOUL, South Korea - South Korea's Foreign Ministry said Tuesday the
government hoped the Virginia Tech shootings, allegedly carried out by a
23-year-old South Korean native, would not "stir up racial prejudice or
confrontation."

Late Tuesday evening in Seoul, the shooter was identified as Cho
Seung-Hui, a senior in the English department, who the South Korean
Foreign Ministry said had been living in the United States since 1992.
Cho was the only suspect named in connection with the deadliest shooting
rampage in modern US history that left 33 dead.

"We are in shock beyond description," said Cho Byung-je, a ministry
official handling North American affairs. "We convey deep condolences to
victims, families and the American people."

The diplomat said there was no known motive for the shootings, and added
that South Korea hoped that the tragedy would not "stir up racial
prejudice or confrontation."

Kim Min-kyung, a South Korean student at Virginia Tech reached by
telephone from Seoul, said there were some 500 Koreans at the school,
including Korean-Americans. She said she had never met the shooter Cho.
Fearing retaliation, she said South Korean students were gathering in
groups "as it could be dangerous."

South Korean diplomats were traveling to the site of the shooting,
Foreign Ministry spokesman Cho Hee-yong said.

Cho was in the US as a resident alien with a home in Centreville, Va.,
who lived on campus, the university said.

"He was a loner, and we're having difficulty finding information about
him," school spokesman Larry Hincker said.

Earlier Tuesday before it emerged that the shooter was from South Korea,
President Roh Moo-hyun offered his "deep condolences to bereaved family
members and wished quick recovery of injured people," the president's
office said in a statement.

A South Korean student was also among those injured in the rampage, and
Roh instructed diplomats to care for the student and confirm whether any
other South Koreans were hurt.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, a former South Korean foreign minister,
said he felt "very much sorry and troubled" by the killings.

"Any such rampant killing of innocent citizens and children is totally
not acceptable and I condemn it in the strongest terms possible," he said.

Despite being technically a state of war for decades against North Korea,
South Korea is a country where citizens are banned from privately owning
guns and where no school shootings are known to have occurred.

However, the country has not been immune from shooting rampages.

In 2005, a military conscript believed to be angered by taunts from
senior officers killed eight fellow soldiers, throwing a grenade into a
barracks where his comrades were sleeping and firing a hail of bullets.

Bolton Wanderers squandered a chance to leap into the Champions League

Arsenal stay two points ahead of Bolton on 56 while leaders Manchester

World champ Dott crowned at China Open

Graeme Dott won the title of the 2007 China open snooker tournament after
beating Jamie Cope 9-5 here on Sunday.

The Scot took the official world number one spot after winning the China
title.

Dott dominated the final as Cope looked jaded after last night's
gruelling semi-final against Barry Hawkins,

Dott won six of the eight frames in the first session for a 6-2 lead in
the best-of-17-frame final.

Dott put together breaks of 72, 60, 70 and 95 to open a four-frame
advantage and leave himself needing three more to take the title.

He took the first frame 71-46 before Cope struck back with a break of 65
to level the match.

Cope fought back after Dott had won the third frame, tying up the match
at 2-2 with a run of 97.

However, Dott won the next with breaks of 72 and 60 before taking
advantage of a mistake by his opponent to open a 4-2 lead.

The 29-year-old Dott lost momentum when the match resumed as Cope trailed
back 6-5 after runs of 91, 77 and 46.

Dott proved his superb form in the tournament after outplaying cope in
the last three breaks after snatching 124, 120 and 64 points.

This is the first time these two have met in professional competition.

An ammunition dump ready to ignite

An armed conflict against Iran could develop into a regional war, which
would be felt across the entire world, said a Chinese Middle East expert.

With two US aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf, and the United States
and Iran seemingly staging large-scale retaliatory military exercises,
the region is becoming an ammunition dump which would only take a spark
to ignite, said a Chinese expert on the Middle East.

"If not well handled, any spark could cause a big fire to this explosive
region," said Hua Liming, a former Chinese ambassador to Iran between
1991 and 1995.

On Tuesday, US warplanes took off from two aircraft carriers in the US
Navy's largest show of force in the Gulf since the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

The maneuvers, involving 15 American ships and more than 100 aircraft, is
sure to exacerbate tensions with Iran, which has frequently condemned the
US military presence off its coastline.

The exercises began only four days after Iran captured 15 British
soldiers allegedly at the mouth of the Shatt al-Arab waterway, which
marks the southern stretch of Iraq's border with Iran.

All these activities remind people of the period just before the United
States was about to attack Iraq four years ago," Hua said.

"But even if the military deployment is completed, it is going to be
extremely difficult for Washington to decide whether to use these forces."

Bush, along with military officers at the Pentagon, might paint a picture
in their minds of overthrowing a hostile regime in the region, but they
will have to spend even more time thinking seriously about the
consequences once the first cannon is fired, Hua said.

He noted that Iranian missiles cannot hit the United States, but they are
capable of delivering a decisive blow to US military bases in the Middle
East

Even days before Saturday's UN vote on a new resolution against Iran, its
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a televised speech his
country would respond to any new UN sanctions by all means to defend
itself from threats.

"If they take illegal actions, we too can take illegal actions," Khamenei
said, without elaborating.

The UN Security Council passed Resolution 1747 unanimously on Saturday,
which includes a ban on Iranian arms exports, and the freeze of assets of
an additional 28 individuals and entities involved in Iran's nuclear and
missile programs.

The resolution was immediately rejected by top Iranian officials,
including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The so-called "illegal actions" mentioned by Iran could involve the
blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the entrance to the Persian Gulf from
the Indian Ocean, striking US overseas military bases, or using its
influence in the Middle East to fan more hatred in the decades-long
confrontation between the Palestinians and Israelis, Hua said.

"It (the war against Iran) could develop into a regional war, which would
be felt across the entire world," he said. But the new UN resolution
shows that the international community is taking a unified position and
have in mind a peaceful way to resolve Iran's nuclear standoff, Hua said.

With 15 nations voting for more sanctions, the new resolution can be
considered added diplomatic pressure rather than substantial punishment,
he said.

Hua noted there were only 20 months left before Bush's second term ends.

"It is unlikely that the president will launch another war which cannot
be finished within his term," Hua said, adding that in American history,
no president has ever launched three unfinished wars.

Both the European Union and the United States insist that Teheran stop
its nuclear program immediately, but they differ on sanctions, with the
EU in favor of a milder form the US stronger.

Their differences in stance is a reflection of their interests in the
region. European nations such as Germany, France and Italy have huge
economic interests in Iran, especially in energy, and are worried that
tougher sanctions or a military attack could hurt their businesses in
Iran.

Germany has become Iran's biggest trade partner, while European companies
such as Shell, BP and Total will not sit back and watch their interests
go up in smoke, Hua said.

The three biggest countries in the EU Germany, France and Britain import
most of their oil from Iran and other Middle East countries, he said.

On the other hand, the United States, after decades of confrontation with
Teheran, does not have any economic presence in the oil-producing
country, and its oil imports from other countries in the region only
accounts for a small portion of its total consumption.

Given their huge interests in the Middle East, some European nations have
announced they are opposed to any military attack.

Some scars have already been left on relations between the United States
and the EU, following the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. Countries such as
France and Germany were openly against it.

"If the United States goes it alone again, it would drive another nail in
the coffin of the transatlantic relationship," Hua said.

He also compared the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) with
that of Iran.

Both countries were named "evil" states by US President George W. Bush
and targeted as a threat to world peace.

Both countries now mistrust the United States and feel there are being
bullied by an unfriendly superpower.

Like the DPRK, Iran also wants to have a guarantee of security from the
Untied States, which the White House has refused, Hua said.

Starting from 2003 when Iran and the international community began their
long-running negotiations, Teheran, on many occasions, had sent a message
to the United States that if Washington could provide the country with a
security guarantee and acknowledge its status as a regional power, it
would consider a compromise or even drop its nuclear plan.

But Washington does not want to offer such a guarantee to a country, it
does not trust, regardless of Iran's influence in the region, Hua said.

Iran partially suspends nuke cooperation

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran announced Sunday that it was partially suspending
cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog while hardline President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad said the latest UN sanctions would not halt the country's
uranium enrichment "even for a second."

Iranian state television quoted Ahmadinejad as saying the additional
Security Council sanctions imposed on Saturday "stem from the hostility
by some powers against Iran."

"It is not a new issue for the Iranian nation. Enemies of the Iranian
nation have made a mistake this time too," Ahmadinejad said, adding the
new sanctions "will not halt Iran's peaceful nuclear program even for a
second."

Meanwhile, government spokesman Gholam Hossein Elham said the Cabinet on
Sunday decided to suspend "code 1-3 of minor arrangements of the
safeguards" with the Vienna-based UN nuclear watchdog, the International
Atomic Energy Agency.

The suspension would "continue until Iran's nuclear case is referred back
to the IAEA from the UN Security Council," Elham said.

Tehran's scaling back of cooperation with the IAEA was in apparent
retaliation for the sanctions unanimously approved by the Security
Council over Tehran's refusal to stop enriching uranium, a process that
can be used in the production of nuclear weapons.

The West strongly suspects Iran's nuclear activities are aimed at
producing weapons though Tehran says they are exclusively for the
production of energy.

The UN sanctions are meant to send Tehran a strong message that its
defiance will leave it increasingly isolated and open to even tougher
penalties.

But Iran remains defiant. The suspension was a response to "Saturday
night's illegal and bullying resolution by Security Council," said Elham,
adding the government was acting fully within law in the move.

In New York, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said "a few
select countries don't have the right to abuse the Security Council" and
described the new sanctions as "illegal, unwarranted and unjustified." He
said they undermine the credibility of the Security Council.

Mottaki said Iran has repeatedly sought negotiations with the powers that
drafted the resolution against his country: the five permanent council
members - the US, Britain, France, Russia and China - and Germany. But he
accused them of lacking the political will to reach a breakthrough.

"If this political will existed, the other side wouldn't have imposed
preconditions on the talks," Mottaki said, referring to demands by the US
and its allies that Iran first halt enrichment before they engage in
negotiations on its nuclear program.

Mottaki said the world has two options to proceed on the nuclear issue:
continued negotiations or confrontation and the resolution was the wrong
choice.

"Of course, it will have its own consequences," he said.

In Tehran, citizens brushed off news of the latest sanctions.

"Why should we care about sanctions?" asked Ali Reza, a 21-year-old
shopping for a digital camera Sunday with his girlfriend. "We've become
accustomed to this kind of news. As long as I can remember, there have
been such reports in the air."

Saeed Laylaz, an Iranian political commentator, said that until the
sanctions hit normal Iranians like Reza - and the drafters of the UN
resolution went to great pains to point out that they did not - Iranians
would continue to shrug them off.

"Neither Western people nor Iranians would benefit from such
confrontation," said Lida Anvari, who was jogging with her husband in a
downtown park. Her husband nodded in agreement, and both said they were
fed up with the news.

Elham said that until now, Iran's cooperation with the IAEA went beyond
requirements under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, which Iran is a
signatory to. He added that Iran has in the past promptly informed the
IAEA about its nuclear plans.

Mastermind of USS Cole attack confesses

WASHINGTON - A Yemeni portrayed as an al-Qaida operative and a member of
a terrorist family confessed to plotting the bombings of the USS Cole and
two US embassies in Africa, killing hundreds, according to a Pentagon
transcript of a Guantanamo Bay hearing.

The transcript released Monday was the fourth from the hearings the
military is holding in private for 14 "high-value" terror suspects who
were kept in secret CIA prisons before they were sent to the US facility
in Cuba last fall.

Last week, Waleed bin Attash said he helped plan the 1998 embassy
bombings in Kenya and Tanzania that killed more than 200, according to
the transcript. He also said he helped organize the 2000 attack on the
USS Cole in which suicide bombers steered an explosives-laden boat into
the guided-missile destroyer, killing 17 sailors.

"I participated in the buying or purchasing of the explosives," bin
Attash said when asked what his role was in the attacks. "I put together
the plan for the operation a year and a half prior to the operation,
buying the boat and recruiting the members that did the operation."

Also alleged to have been Osama bin Laden's bodyguard at one time, bin
Attash is in his late 20s and is a Yemeni who was born and raised in
Saudi Arabia, authorities have said. Said to be an al-Qaida operational
chief, bin Attash is known as Tawfiq bin Attash or Tawfiq Attash Khallada
or simply Khallad. He was captured in 2003.

US intelligence documents allege that bin Attash is a "scion of a
prominent terrorist family" that includes his father, Mohammed, who was
close to bin Laden, and younger brother Hassan, who has been held at
Guantanamo since 2004, arriving at the age of 17.

Several brothers attended al-Qaida training camps in Afghanistan in the
1990s and two have been killed, one in a 2001 US airstrike in
Afghanistan, the US says.

Bin Attash told a March 12 hearing that he met with the man who did the
embassy bombings just a few hours before the operation took place,
according to the transcript released by the Defense Department

"I was the link between Osama bin Laden and his deputy Sheikh Abu Hafsd
Al Masri," who took over the leadership of al-Qaida in Iraq after its
leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, was killed in a US airstrike last June.

Bin Attash also said he was with bin Laden when the Cole was attacked
while refueling in Yemen's port of Aden.

Legal experts have criticized the US decision to bar independent
observers from the hearings, called combatant status review tribunals.
Carl Tobias, a University of Richmond law professor, said "legitimate
criticisms can be raised" about the confessions coming out of the
hearings.

"Of course, no one's there to know, other than what we see from the
transcripts and what the hearing officers hear," Tobias said.

"The claim has been that some of the confessions were extracted by
torture or other activities that are inappropriate, and (there are)
doubts about whether the detainees are telling the truth," he said.

Many have questioned the confession of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, also known
as KSM, who claimed responsibility or partial responsibility for nearly
three dozen plots including the 9/11 attacks on the US, according to
transcripts of his March 10 hearing released last week.

Bruce Hoffman, a terrorism expert at Georgetown University, said he has
been surprised by the skepticism over the transcripts released so far.

"It dovetails with what we know," Hoffman said of the reported
confessions. "With KSM, this guy was the evil genius he describes. ... In
terrorism, it's a matter of keeping lots of irons in the fire and it's
whichever ones are coming to fruition that you go with."

The hearings are being held to determine whether the suspects should be
declared "enemy combatants" who can be held indefinitely and prosecuted
by military tribunals. If, as expected, the 14 are declared enemy
combatants, they could then be charged and tried under the military
commissions law signed by President Bush in October.

Iran leader seeks to address Security Council

TEHRAN - Iran said on Sunday President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wants to go
before the UN Security Council to defend his country's civilian nuclear
plans, which the West says are a covert attempt to make atom bombs.

The five permanent members of the Council - the United States, France,
Britain, China and Russia - plus Germany are discussing imposing new
sanctions on Iran over its nuclear ambitions, which Tehran insists are
entirely peaceful.

"The president of Iran plans to speak in a possible meeting of the
Security Council on Iran's nuclear program to defend the right of the
Iranian nation to use peaceful nuclear technology," state TV on Sunday
quoted government spokesman Gholamhossein Elham as saying, without giving
further details.

Iran's IRNA news agency quoted Elham as saying Ahmadinejad planned to
attend "if the Security Council has a meeting on Iran's nuclear program."

Chinese UN ambassador Wang Guangya told reporters after a meeting of the
six on Sunday in New York: "Any member has the right to come to the
council."

Alejandro Wolff, the US representative, said he had seen the news report
but no request for a visa. "I have not seen anything concrete so I don't
know what to make of it," he said after the meeting.

Iran has ignored United Nations demands that it halt uranium enrichment,
a process Western nations say Tehran is mastering so it can produce atom
bombs. Iran, the world's fourth biggest oil exporter, insists its aim is
nuclear power generation.

In December the Security Council imposed a package of limited sanctions
including a ban on the transfer of sensitive nuclear technology or
know-how. It threatened further steps if Iran failed to meet its February
21 deadline to suspend enrichment.

Among measures under consideration are a variety of financial
restrictions as well as an expansion of an earlier list of people, firms
and groups whose assets would be frozen or with whom trade would be
banned, such as Iran's Revolutionary Guards and the state-owned Bank
Sepah.

The six are also discussing a travel ban against those on the list and an
embargo on conventional arms.

French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy told a news conference in
Abu Dhabi that new sanctions should be imposed on Iran for failing to
meet Security Council demands.

"Our position has not changed but it is based on two words: firmness and
dialogue," he said according to Arabic translation.

"Our aim is to find a solution based on negotiation," he added when asked
about the possibility of military action, a step the United States has
not ruled out if diplomacy fails.
