Kuznetsova told a news conference just ahead of her second-round match
with American Abigail Spears that she was withdrawing because of a
stomach muscle injury.

"When I got up this morning, my abdomen was getting worse and worse
although I received treatment yesterday," Kuznetsova said.

Kuznetsova, the top seed, arrived in Beijing fresh from helping Russia
clinch the Fed Cup title last weekend. She had a first-round bye.

That follows being routed by world No.1 Justine Henin in the final of the
U.S. Open last week.

In early matches played Wednesday, third seed Amelie Mauresmo of France
easily beat Romanian Ioana Raluca Olaru 6-2, 6-2.

Lindsay Davenport also had an easy time in dispatching fellow American
Julie Ditty 6-0, 6-2.
