Three Gorges changed after the water storage of the Dam

www.chinanews.cn 2007-04-27 09:49:15

Pictures taken on Oct. 30, 2006 show the beautiful scenery of the Three
Gorges after its water level rise.

Chinanews, Chongqing, April 27 - The Three Gorges Area used to be famous
for the precarious landscapes there. However, after the water storage of
the Three Gorges Dam Project, the water level in the area has reached 156
m, with quite a large part of landscapes there there having been
submerged under water. Today's Three Gorges Area looks less precarious
but even more attractive.
In fact, the height of the mountains in the area is between 1,000 m and
1,500 m. That is to say, the mountainous landscapes in the area will not
be affected by the rising water, but tourists will not be able to enjoy
drifting over the rapids there, with the rising water level covering the
shoal patches scattered in the river. Instead, they can travel by large
boats, whereby they will be able to enjoy the riverine scene with more
sufficient time. The rising water level also enables travelers to visit
"the Stream of the Goddess" by motor boat now. In the past, not many
people could see its beauty as it would be a too dangerous trip.
Any visitor to the "old" Three Gorges Area will surely be stunned by the
radical changes here. For example, the Baidi Ancient City is now
surrounded by water, and quite a lot of natural landscapes have already
been submerged.
It can be estimated that even the changed landscapes will attract more
travelers from both home and abroad.

China Mobile ranks 5th global brand, ahead of IBM

www.chinanews.cn 2007-04-26 09:53:17

(Source: China Daily/Agencies)

Apr.26 - China Mobile has leaped ahead of household names such as
Marlboro and Wal-Mart to rank fifth in an influential annual ranking of
the world's top brands.
The brand of the world's biggest wireless operator is now valued at more
than $41 billion - an increase of 5 percent from last year.
At the end of the first quarter, China Mobile's subscribers topped 316
million - more than the population of the US.
Three Chinese banks also made the top 100 list, with the Industrial and
Commercial Bank of China coming in 33rd, Bank of China 38th and China
Construction Bank 61st.
Internet search engine Google topped the list, with a brand value of
$66.4 billion.
The Financial Times called Google "an outstanding example" of how to
develop a brand of enormous value both to customers and shareholders.
The Internet domain name google.com was registered by founders Sergey
Brin and Larry Page in September 1997.
US conglomerate General Electric came in second at $61.9 billion,
followed by Microsoft at almost $55 billion.
Soft drinks giant Coca Cola was fourth with a brand value of $44.1
billion, far more than its rival Pepsi, at $11.8 billion, which was
ranked 48th.
The brand ranking was compiled by market researcher Millward Brown and
the findings published in cooperation with the Financial Times.
It is based on the brand's earnings, the brand's contribution to the
parent business and the brand's future prospects.
Key factors in building brand recognition this year ranged from corporate
responsibility to serving customers in emerging markets like China,
Brazil and India, according to the study.
The rankings were based on publicly available financial data along with
primary research, including interviews with a million consumers
worldwide, Millward Brown said.
For Google, which ranked seventh a year ago, the jump to the top
underscores how quickly the search engine has become an everyday name.

Bus accident claims 26 lives in Chongqing

www.chinanews.cn 2007-04-24 10:01:18

(Source: Xinhua)

Apr.24 - An unsafe bridge has also been blamed for a bus accident that
has so far claimed 26 lives in Chongqing.
The guardrails on each side of the bridge were only ten centimeters in
height, far lower than the minimum height of 46 centimeters required by
law, Li Yizhong, Minister of the State Administration of Work Safety
(SAWS), said at the scene of the accident.
"The railings were made of cement but not reinforced by steel bars," he
said. "A combination of poor road quality, overloading and lax traffic
management are to blame for the worst road accident in China so far this
year," he said.
Local traffic police are blaming overloading and speeding as the main
causes of the accident. They said the bus should not have been carrying
more than 25 passengers. Police also said overnight rain may have caused
the road to become slippery and contributed to the accident.
The accident happened around 8:10 a.m. on Monday when a bus carrying 32
passengers, seven more than its limit, ploughed through a guardrail of
the Changsheng bridge that spans a narrow gully. It was traveling on a
road that runs parallel to the Jialing River on its way from downtown
Yubei District to Beibei, in the suburbs of Chongqing, on Monday morning.
The bus plunged 13 meters killing 22 passengers on the spot.
Two others died on the way to the hospital. Eight people were rushed to
hospital where six, including the bus driver, are being treated for
serious injuries.
Most victims are residents from the two districts and police are still
trying establish their identities.
Half of the railings were destroyed by the accident and vehicles have
been diverted to a nearby highway.
Zhou Mubing, vice mayor of Chongqing and head of the rescue team, said
the Beibei District has organized 32 teams to meet victims and their
families, console them and start sorting out compensation issues.
Government leaders, including Zhou Mubing, are overseeing the rescue
operation and handling the aftermath of the accident.
The bus belonged to the city's state-owned Yuyun Company. Statistics show
the company is registered with an asset of 610 million yuan (about 79
million U.S. dollars) and employs more than 2,300 staff. It owns about
1,350 buses and trucks and operates about 390 routes.
Statistics from the Chongqing municipal government show 253 people died
in 202 road accidents in the first quarter of this year. Of the major
accidents, 62.5 percent were caused by overloading, which was blamed for
about 62 percent of the total fatalities.
Last October, a bus fell off the elevated on-ramp of a Chongqing bridge
killing 30 people and injuring 20.
On January 1, overloading caused an road accident that killed nine people
and injured 35.
Just ten days ago, five people were killed and 36 were injured in a
52-vehicle pile-up in Chongqing. The vehicles carried 1,000 tons more
than their limit, and some of them carried five times their stipulated
weight limits.

Foreign students in China up more than 30% this year

www.chinanews.cn 2004-12-10 15:30:08

Chinanews, Dec 9 - There are currently more than 500 colleges and
universities in China's 31 provinces, autonomous regions and
municipalities that are ready to take in foreign students. The number of
foreign students who come to study in China is growing at an annual rate
of 30% and the academic level is also improving year by year.
In 2003, China accepted nearly 78,000 foreign students from 175 countries
and regions. 6,153 of them, or 8% of the total number of foreign
students, were offered scholarships by the Chinese government.
Another characteristic of the influx of foreign students is the obvious
advancement in academic levels. In 2003, 1,637 foreign students studied
for their doctorate degrees, an increase of 17.9% from 2002, while 3,397
foreign students studied for their master degrees, an increase of 18.9%
from 2002.
With respect to the distribution of courses, the majority of foreign
students were liberal arts majors, with Chinese language and medicine as
top favorites. In terms of the continental spread, Asian students were
the most numerous, while in terms of countries, the top five were South
Korea, Japan, U.S, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Textbook issue not Japan's internal affairs

www.chinanews.cn 2005-04-08 09:21:47

(Source: Xinhuanet)

BEIJING, April 7 - Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said
Thursday, "Japan's newly-approved middle school history textbooks try to
exculpate Japan's militarism and severely hurts the feeling of its
victims. It is not Japan's internal affairs."
The textbook issue affects the relations among Japan and its neighboring
countries, including China. It will be vehemently condemned by people
from all Asian countries that were victimized by Japan, including the
Chinese.
"We seriously urge the Japanese government to honestly honor its
commitment of expressing remorse for its militaristic history, and take
effective measures to eliminate the odious impact of the issue, so as to
win trust from Asian people," Qin said.

China reacts to skyrocketing iron ore prices

www.chinanews.cn 2005-04-01 13:48:32

Chinanews, Mar. 31 - The annual international iron ore price negotiations
have finally closed. However, the results have not calmed the Chinese
iron ore market. Owing to an increasingly serious problem of price hikes,
China will be obliged to screen importers, implement an iron ore import
license mechanism starting on May 1st and control entrepot trade.
The recovery of the international steel industry has led to the
increasing popularity of iron ore in recent years, and steel producers
who have signed long-term contracts with their suppliers have benefited
from iron ore price hikes. However, Brazil's Companhia Vale do Rio Doce,
Australia's Rio Tinto and BlueScope Steel Limited (formerly BHP Steel
Group), the world's largest iron ore producers, cannot let such an
opportunity to profit slip through their fingers. Therefore, they
initiated a see-saw battle on iron ore prices in the first quarter of
this year and accomplished complete victory by raising the price of iron
ore by a margin of 71.5%.
In order to control iron ore imports, relevant departments have decided
to implement an iron ore import license mechanism. According to the
latest regulations, only enterprises with iron ore import volumes of over
300,000 tons in 2004 or more than 100,000 tons in Jan. and Feb. of this
year are qualified for iron ore import licenses, and they may not switch
trade imported iron ore to other enterprises without import licenses.

RMB appreciation a certainty

www.chinanews.cn 2005-03-31 11:43:58

Chinanews, Mar. 30 - The world's oil and ore prices increased
significantly; real estate prices also grew slightly. RMB exchange rate
policy reform is in the offing, and RMB appreciation is simply a matter
of when and how, said Zhao Xijun, vice director of the Financial and
Securities Institute of the People's University of China.
"Our objective in terms of reform is to have a market-based, managed and
floating exchange rate. When we consider reform plans, our purpose is to
make the exchange rate more responsive to supply and demand in the
market," stated Premier Wen Jiabao during an NPC press conference on Mar.
14th. "Regarding the timing of the reform or specific measures, maybe
they will come unexpectedly," he continued.
As for the range of RMB appreciation, financial experts believe that the
Chinese currency will appreciate by about 5% to 20%. Overseas investment
banks expect a higher range than Chinese experts. However, most
economists agree that the RMB should appreciate and that the existing
RMB-USD pegged exchange rate mechanism will hinder China's development.

Co-renting with opposite sex a trend in Chinese cities

www.chinanews.cn 2005-03-18 16:07:10

Chinanews, Mar. 18 - Co-renting with members of the opposite sex has
become very popular among young people in big Chinese cities, such as
Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
"Young women had better not choose to co-rent. Even if they have chosen
to, they should keep their integrity and maintain a sober mind in order
to avoid unnecessary trouble." Experts expressed their worry. They
compared the co-renting phenomenon to "dancing on a steel wire." Experts
point out that improving tolerance and decreasing societal pressures have
created the possibility for this type of cohabitation.
In Beijing, the bulk of these co-renters are young people without
families in the area. Others have families in Beijing, but their houses
are too small, or they simply want freedom. Most of the co-renters are
young white-collar workers, often in the media industry or with foreign
companies; they tend to hold at least a bachelor's degree.
Some experts said that with the evolution of people's beliefs and the
development of a more mobile urban population, co-renting would become
increasingly common.
A burgeoning fashion, this phenomenon directly challenges traditional
concepts of family, marriage and ethics. The public has two distinct
attitudes towards co-renting. Some tolerate the trend, or even applaud
it, claiming that it fosters the pursuit freedom and individuality.
However, others reject the notion. They consider co-renting a defiant and
avant-garde behavior that encourages sexual promiscuity, and will corrupt
public morals and hinder the societal progress.

China's lunar-rover revealed

www.chinanews.cn 2005-03-17 13:39:46

Chinanews, March 16 - Yesterday, Ouyang Ziyuan, a chief scientist of
lunar applied science at China's "Chang'e Project" and a member of the
Chinese Academy of Sciences, disclosed, for the first time, information
about the development of a lunar-rover.
According to Ouyang, the lunar-rover should be able to advance, reverse,
swerve, climb, fetch things, collect samples and right itself (turn over
after toppling). In addition to these basic functions, it should also
have elementary artificial intelligence such as identifying objects, as
well as climbing and steering clear of barriers.
In addition, because the lunar-rover needs to execute its probing tasks
on the moon's surface, it must be provided with the characteristics of a
spacecraft that can adapt to the special environment in space. Not only
should it withstand the "falling, climbing, rolling and jarring" of the
launch process, but it must also be able to endure the "abuse" of
spending years in outer space.
Electronic equipment used in the lunar-rover, especially highly
integrated, radiation sensitive, micro-electronic devices, should have
corresponding anti-radiation reinforcement measures to ensure that it can
work normally under the conditions of extreme temperatures and low
gravity.
It has been learned that the satellite "Chang'e 1," launched by the
Circumlunar Probing Project, the first phase of China's Moon-probing
Project, is China's first circumlunar satellite. The "Chang'e 1" will
enter full-scale production in August of this year and is predicted to
launch before 2007.

Romantic places in China's three big cities

www.chinanews.cn 2005-03-07 14:10:02

Translated from a China Newsweek article written by Sun Ran
Shanghai
1. The bund (Waitan): Bright lights from roadside buildings make a
beautiful night view. It is a renowned dating spot.
2. Xujiahui Catholic Church: An oasis of serenity amid all the hustle and
bustle. The unique Gothic building and the square in front of the church
make the atmosphere more exotic.
3. Alley entrances: these buildings are unique to Shanghai and rich in
traditional Shanghai flavor.
4. Pudong Riverside Road: It is a famous lover's lane by the Huangpu
River, the mother river of Shanghai, and it has a beautiful panoramic
view of Puxi (West of the River).
5. Waibaidu Bridge: The old iron bridge has been the love scene for many
movies and TV plays of Shanghai in the 1930s.
Beijing
1. Hutong (alley): these places are part of daily life for old-time
Beijing residents where their emotions and feelings are witnessed .
2. The Great Wall: Lovers would climb the Great wall together as a
testament that they will not part ways in difficult times.
3. Subways: Beijing subways have a long history and are stages for many
love stories.
4. The Fragrant Hills: The red maple leaves all over the Fragrant Hills
are just as beautiful as love. It is the most charming autumn scenery in
Beijing.
Guangzhou
1. Old Shamian Street: Exotic roadside buildings make Shamian a place of
infinite charm. Located by the Pearl River, the shaded street is full of
coffee shops and bars.
2. Ershadao: This place is a symbol of success, happiness and tasteful
life style. Luxurious apartments, villas, the Guangzhou Arts Museum and
the Xinhai Concert Hall are the dream living places for young couples.
3. Pear River: The scene of the river with brightly-lit bridges and
luminous buildings along the banks is truly one of the best ornaments for
love. Old banyans and shaded lights from the banks and the cruise liners
on the river make it all that much more beautiful.
4. Baiyun (White Cloud) Mountain: the mountain is the most beautiful
place in Guangzhou when night falls and few visitors venture there. Many
lovers like to climb up to the top, hand in hand, to enjoy the beautiful
night view.

At present, all 1,500 stalls in the market have been rented out. Stall owners are mainly proprietors from the old Xiushui Market and other markets such as "Yabaolu", "Hongqiao" and "Tianyi". The new Xiushui Market is now being prepared for the grand opening. The New Xiushui Market would hire the property management company from Guomao to manage it. In addition, it will employ more than 60 security guards and assistant supervisors for all the floors. On or around March 11, 2005, 1,500 shop owners will move in Xiushui to start business while restaurants such as the Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant would not be able to move in until mid 2005 because of decoration and management problems. When the new Xiushui Market opens, developers of the market would sponsor a series of functions. These functions are now being planned. How should the new Xiushui Market conduct its business? The Chaoyang District Government, supervising authority of the new Xiushui Market, stated for the first time that the new Xiushui Market would put a complete end to counterfeit goods of renowned brands. "If Xiushui cannot be prosperous without counterfeit goods, so be it." said Tong Keke. He also emphasized that counterfeit goods of famous brands would bring negative image to Beijing's development. New Xiushui has to not only upgrade itself in terms of hardware but also in terms of business concepts. Since last November, Chaoyang District has been cooperating with the chambers of commerce of the United States and European countries. They have listed 9 famous brands, including Louis Vuiton and Chanel, for key protection. As soon as products of these 9 brands are found in Xiushui Market and Yaxiu Market or other markets, they will be deemed as counterfeit products on the spot and enforcement action would follow. Eliminating counterfeit goods of famous brands would ensure foreign investors that their investment in Beijing is totally safe and their intellectual property rights are well protected. Consumer Price Index to increase 4 percent this year

www.chinanews.cn 2005-01-20 13:56:00

Chinanews, Jan. 19 - According to the latest research report put out by
the Price-Monitoring Center of the National Development and Reform
Commission, the rate of increase of China's Consumer Price Index (CPI)
this year would be around 4 percent.
The report mentioned mounting pressure this year to pass on manufacturing
cost increases to consumer prices. In the past three years, production
material prices rose cumulatively by 26.3 percent. This inflationary
tendency is still continuing and would strengthen the lagging influence
of this trend on the overall rise in price levels this year.
The report pointed out that policy-induced price adjustments of municipal
public service would obviously increase. This year, price increases in
this area would be distinctly higher than last year's and would be an
important reason for the rise in overall price level. The price increases
in International markets and the devaluation of the US dollar would
magnify the inflationary effect on China's imports. If oil prices
continue high or even go much higher, there will be new pressure on
China's price indexes.
The report also predicted that retail prices would rise about 2.5 percent
this year, while production material prices would keep on increasing,
though at a lower growth rate than that of last year.

BLAGNAC, France, Jan. 18 - The world's biggest ever passenger plane
Airbus A380 made its debut Tuesday in Blagnac near Toulouse in southern
France before thousands of VIP guests, including leaders of the four

The first test flight of the plane is scheduled at the end of March or at
the beginning of April, according to Airbus chief Noel Forgeard.
A380 is a double-decker mastodon with a wingspan of 80 meters, an overall
length of 73 meters, and a height of 24 meters. A typical one can take on
board 555 passengers, while in a charter configuration it can carry up to
840 people.
Air France will use the plane for its Paris-New York airline asearly as
in April 2007, Air France's chief Jean-Cyril Spinetta told French private
radio Europe 1.
Airbus has already 139 orders from 13 airlines with a catalogueprice of
between 263 and 286 million dollars each.

Popular Jingdezhen porcelains

www.chinanews.cn 2005-01-17 17:08:27

More than 20,000 porcelain artworks modelled primarily on the Tang
(618-907), Song (960-1279), Yuan (1206-1367), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing
(1616-1911) Dynasties were displayed and sold in Hai'an, Jiangsu province
from January 11 to 21. These porcelain artworks were sold at prices
ranging from several yuan to more than 200,000 yuan. Jingdezhen
porcelains are famous both locally and abroad for their four
characteristics, "white as jade, bright as mirror, thin as paper, sound
like a chime". The porcelain artworks in the exhibition were popular
among the citizens in Hai'an.
